How to mask off a room for painting?

Is it one of your first painting jobs and you don’t know how to mask paint properly? Here is a brief guide with suggestions about how to use masking tape properly and choose the best product for every need, in order to save time, money and improve quality.

How to mask paint with masking tape:

When painting and using masking products, everything starts with the cleaning: make sure to clean thoroughly the surfaces you need to paint and mask, and to let them dry before applying masking tape. The dust could prevent a correct adhesion of both the tape and the paint.

After the cleaning, you can start with the masking procedure. Here are the most important steps to follow to know how to mask paint in the best way: first, unwind the tape gently and apply it on the desired surfaces with a soft pressure of your fingers. Remember that masking tapes give their best results when used at environment temperature (15°C-30°C). Make sure to cover all the gaps and to not leave any split under the tape; if necessary, cut the tape in shorter stripes to mask corners and difficult areas.

Now you can start with the painting. When finished, remove the tape just after the paint has dried to make the job easier. The removal is the most delicate step when dealing with DIY masking tape: remove the tape with a slow, gentle but steady push of your hand, keeping it at an angle of 45°. Now you are finished! If you want some more details, you can read our article about using masking tape.

How to choose the right masking tape:

Choosing the right tape is as much important as using it properly. Different masking conditions require different tapes, so before starting the job you have to understand which tape you need to gain the cleanest results:

    • For general masking applications: if you are looking for an economic masking tape for general masking applications, you can choose a product such as PPM 6010, a masking tape with an excellent quality price ratio that offers reliability at competitive price.

    • For high performance masking applications: if you seek professional results, you can choose instead a high quality masking tape such as PPM 6012, a product with an advanced adhesive formula that ensures top level performances.
    • If you prefer a masking tape with thicker consistence, take a look at PPM 6015, a product with a thick paper backing.

    • How to mask paint when dealing with curved surfaces? When masking irregular surfaces, regular masking tapes can break when stretched too much around the curves. In that case, you have to choose a product with high elasticity and great conformability, such as PPM 2070, a highly crepe paper masking tape that easily follows the most difficult shapes without rips and tears.
